- Before the curse:
David and James were born into a family struggling with poverty. One day, Rumplestiltskin came to his parents and struck a deal. If they were to give him one of the twins, they would have enough money to save their farm. They decided to give him James. None of them ever heard about him again until James’ death, when Rumplestiltskin came back with another deal. David would replace his brother. In return, Rumplestiltskin would make the farm profitable again.
Being a prince wasn’t all fun and games. His first day on the job, David had to slay a dragon and marry a princess for the good of the realm. He didn’t have much of a problem with the dragon, but not marrying for love seemed wrong to him. That feeling only grew stronger when he met Snow White, who was living as a bandit on one of the main roads, and fell in love with her.
He ran away from his adopted father, found Snow White, and together they led a revolt against the Queen and established their kingdom. They worked together to find a way out of the curse that Regina promised to bring down on them, and he was the reason Emma made it through the wardrobe.
- During the curse:
Regina wasn’t aware of the switch for James with David, so the curse shaped David’s memories to be as she remembered - arrogant, self-centered, and devoted to his father’s interests. David lives next to his father, Albert Nolan, head of the Spencer-Nolan law firm, with his girlfriend Abigail Covet, daughter of Mr. Covet, head of Storybrooke’s bank. Albert’s quietly grooming David to be the next head of the firm, and less quietly encouraging him to marry Abigail.
David’s time in a coma left him indecisive, hazy, and with a decided crush on Mary Margaret, but his Storybrooke memories are coming back as he spends more time with those touchstones.
- Connections:
Kathryn- the girlfriend he hadn’t entirely gotten along with before his accident. After one of their numerous fights, he left and got into his accident. He doesn’t know how he feels about her.
Mary Margaret- He knows that she saved his life and he feels he owes her for that. He enjoys spending time with her and thinks that he is developing feelings for her.
Regina- She found him on the side of the road and became his emergency contact while he was in a coma. He feels grateful to her.
Albert Nolan: his father.
Killian Jones: they’ve paled around at the Rabbit Hole.

Emma is standing here, as Henry’s mother, fully acknowledging Regina as his mother as well.
Maybe no one has said the words “our son” yet, and I hope eventually they do. But Emma really basically said it right here.
